Burstwick takes over Close House at Captain’s Away Weekend

Last weekend our Men’s Captain Martin Gill took a 42-strong crowd from Burstwick to the home of Lee Westwood, Close House Golf Club.

The scene was set for a great weekend as we turned up to one of my favourite golf complexes. If you’ve never been to Close House before I would very much encourage you to go - it’s absolutely fantastic.

When you drive into the car park you immediately know you’re somewhere special - and when you get onto the first green of the Colt this is fully confirmed. The greens on this course, that has previously hosted DP World Tour event The British Masters, are huge, undulating, fast and very true, and some of the views of the Northumberland surroundings are truly stunning.

The weather, for the first round on Saturday was absolutely stunning which was the icing on the cake.

For this golf weekend I approached our Captain Martin with an idea of doing a Live Leaderboard with our new Golf Genius software (which is coming to all of Burstwick’s events from 2025) and he was delighted with the idea - so we did, and it was a massive hit with the members who played.

On the Saturday we ran an Individual Stableford with a live leaderboard, and in the background Golf Genius also ran a blind pairs competition. The live leaderboard was set up to stop after 15 holes to add some tension to the tournament and the results were kept secret until the presentation on the evening.

On Sunday we then held a Texas Scramble on the Filly course, and despite the complete U-turn in the weather (my god it was wet!) everyone enjoyed another great round of golf.

It was one hell of a weekend and we are looking forward to next year’s Captain Lee Sargeson taking us all to The Belfry which we’re sure will be just as enjoyable!
