Congratulations to the Matchplay Finals Winners!

On Saturday 28th September we held our Matchplay Finals Day which is the climax of the matchplay tournaments we hold throughout the summer months. The finalists were as follows:

Scratch Final (36 Holes): Chris Spenceley vs Lee Webster

Men’s Final: Steve Beaumont vs Paul Bateson

Ladies’ Final: Laura Key vs Chris Wicks (postponed)

Seniors’ Pairs Final: Steve Strafford & David Key vs Steve Alger & Bryan Cobbold

There was also a Seniors Team Matchplay which was unable to be played on the Finals day between Andy Coult & Shaun McGeachy vs Paul Rimmer & Neil McBride.

The weather was lovely for the Finals Day and players were treated to a very light breeze with sunshine.

In the Scratch Final (which is 36 holes, all the other finals are over 18) Spenceley took a nice lead of 4 Up after the first round against Lee Webster (who shot level par for round 1!), which meant that Lee had his work cut out against the in-form Chris. In the end it was too much for the past champion Webster to come back and Chris won on the 27th green, the exact same score scenario that happened to Alan Key when James Bisby won last year. Tough school!

All of the other matches were very close and went down to the wire in what was a fantastic day of golf for the club.

The Men’s Champion was Paul Bateson, who won on the last hole against Steve Beaumont, and Steve Alger together with his partner Bryan Cobbold won their match on the 17th greens after a very close match with Club founder David Key and Steve Strafford.

It was great to see some great golf in the matches. Well done to all of the Matchplay Champions, and commiserations to the runners up, you all played some amazing golf and did the club very proud!
