Martin Gill’s Europe romp to Victory at Burstwick Cup
Last weekend we hosted one of the most popular events in our calendar - The Burstwick Cup! This is a Ryder Cup style event where players are selected for team Europe and USA and are pitted against each other in matchplay over the course of the weekend.
Europe, who were Captained by Martin Gill, got off to a strong start in the fourballs on the Saturday with a lead of 6-5 over the USA, captained by Lee Sargeson.
As many of you may know, the Saturday scores are often a little artbitrary as the games on Sunday almost always make the game swing one way or the other on their own.
Fancy dress was the order of the weekend, with special mentions to Callum Stuart and Joe Sherwood who pulled out all the stops with their american outfits on day one, and to both Captains who absolutely knocked it out of the park on Sunday with their outfits.
Martin dressed as an old English knight which signified he was ready for a brutal battle, wheres as Lee decided to instill confidence within his team by hilariously dressing as Donald Trump - complete with his “Make America Great Again” cap, red tie and bloody bandage on his right ear! Well played Lee, very well played!
As the teams went out on Sunday in their individual matches it was very tight for the first few games, but with 22 points available, we knew that anything could happen.
As the day wore on the midway games started to produce a tidal pressure on the match, swaying a plethora of points towards Europe and sealing the deal for Martin before the last few games got anywhere near hole 18. In the end Europe won 21-12 and celebrated into the evening after a delicious two course meal in our restaurant and a eventful medal presentation!
Thanks once again to all that made the Burstwick Cup happen, we will go again in 2025!
