Introducing the 2023 Men’s Captain, John Ward

2023 Captain John Ward

Hello members of Burstwick,

From 25th February this year it will be my privilege and honour to represent the Burstwick Country Golf as your Men’s Captain for the 2023 season. I am very much looking forward to the year ahead to promote this ever-improving golf club.

I would like to start by thanking our immediate past Captain Nigel Colley for his year in office. Nigel did a great job after the pandemic picking back up where the club left off and continued the rise in our ever improving reputation.

I have been a member of the club for over 10 years and have enjoyed seeing the results of a lot of hard work by the greenkeepers over that time led by Mark, who works tirelessly to constantly improve the course, and I think despite the recent wet spell, the course continues to deliver a good test of our golf skills. Over the 10 years I have been at the club I have met some amazing friends and I have to say that the members at Burstwick are some of the best I have experienced at any club.

With the recent new investment made at the club, including the new installation of the Toptracer driving range, new tee boxes, paths, car park extensions and tree planting projects plus various machinery, I feel is really moving the club forward and is fantastic to see.

During my captaincy I will be supported by our new Vice Captain Martin Gill, who I look forward to sharing some time with at the captain’s invitational events. I wish Martin all the best for the next two years of his golf career as vice, then captain of the club.

As Captain of Burstwick Golf Club my chosen charity is the The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation If you could please support my charity if you can during the year.

The captains Charity open Am- Am will be play on 29th July will be a good day with a halfway house and good golf, so please enter a team if you are able to support this important charity event.

Burstwick’s first Hull & District Captain of Captains

For those who don’t know, this year is the first ever opportunity for Burstwick to have a Captain of Captains of the Hull & District Captains’ Association. There are 15 clubs in the Hull & District Captains Association, which has been going for over 60 years, and every Men’s Captain at these clubs becomes a life member when they are Captain. Each year, a different club is allowed to nominate a Captain of Captains and it is our first ever turn for this honour. Burstwick’s Past Captains had the privilege of nominating one of their own, and Brian Wilson (Burstwick Captain 2014) was the person given that role.

Brian is a very well known member of Burstwick and a big personality wherever he goes, and I am honoured to have him by my side in 2023. We will be attending many events together and I’m sure we will enjoy every second of our tenures. Good luck Brian!

It just leaves me to say have a great year at the golf club, take care of the course by replacing your divots and pitch marks, thank you again to Nigel for the last years work, let’s all enjoy watching the course improve whilst we are out there playing golf.

I look forward to meeting many members during the year and enjoying a round of golf with as many as possible. Happy Golfing, take care.

Regards
John Ward
