Chris Spenceley wins the 2023 Club Championship
ON Saturday 16th & Sunday 17th September we held our annual Club Championship which had been unfortunately postponed twice due unforseen circumstances.
The greens weren’t perfect due to only having being cored three weeks previous but the show must go on and the players headed out on their 36-hole, two day strokeplay journey.
On day one the top 16 gross scores go through to seeded tee times for the second round on Sunday, and in the lead were three players tied on 71(+1): Rob Draper, Jamie Gill and James Osborne.
Day 2 saw tougher conditions with the Burstwick breeze gusting to over 20mph which made the course show its teeth a little more, helping separate the wheat from the chaff.
There was a lot to play for as nine players were within five shots of the overnight leader, and it was scratch handicapper Chris Spenceley who prevailed with a fantastic score of level par on Sunday to take the Club Championship by one shot from Jamie Gill! A brilliant round in tough conditions, and to come from five back was extremely impressive!
As part of the Club Championship there is also a net trophy to play for, the Ted Key Trophy, and this was won by Karl Jeffs with 69+66 for a total of 135!
Well done Chris and Karl for these great wins, your names are now in the Burstwick history books!
