A letter from the 2021 Men's Captain
My name is Steve Alger and I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to those who don't know me.
I have been a member of Burstwick for 5 years and have the honour of being Club Captain for the 2021-22 season.
As anyone who has played with me will confirm, my love of the game greatly outstrips my ability which despite Matts best efforts is, shall we say, wanting!
On behalf of the club, I would like to thank David Smith for his efforts last year in what I think we can safely say was a very testing and somewhat strange time the like of which I hope we never see again.
I became Dave’s Vice late in the process but still in plenty of time to lose the Burstwick Cup to him in my very first task as Vice-Captain. I hope my Vice, Nigel Colley, was paying particular attention to the subtle way I helped my Captain to look like a golfing god in the Singles on day 2 of the competition!
A great two days of competition played in the right spirit and, as Dave remarked earlier in the season, a competition we hope to make inclusive to the a wider part of the membership this year.
My chosen charity this year is Dove House Hospice, so please look out for the collection boxes in the clubhouse and please, do feel free to dispose of your ‘shrapnel’ in them.
I will be holding a ‘Charity AM-AM’ with half-way house on the 31st July followed by a race night in the evening (hopefully with a few auction items) to raise funds for this very worthy charity.
My Away trip this year is looking likely to be on Sunday 25th – Monday 26th July at Oulton Hall, near Leeds, I will be putting a sheet on the board in due course.
I’d love to see as many of you as possible at these events so please look out for further information at the club and online.
There will also be other raffles and events that will be raising money throughout the year so please look out for them and please give generously to a really great cause.
Whilst this year has had a far from a normal start, we have a great club management team who have worked hard to ensure our club has grown to become one of the premier golf clubs in the East Riding if not Yorkshire. We now have practice and coaching facilities and two professionals who are the envy of every club in the area.
I would also like to give a huge shout out to our greenkeepers and Dave Key who have worked tirelessly during lockdown and despite the best efforts of the British weather, have got the course into a fantastic condition for us to return to golf on.
Please remember though, to keep the course in tip top condition we, as members, all have a responsibility to help our greenkeepers by repairing our pitch marks on greens and replacing our divots on the fairways. Care for the Course is for everyone not just our Greenkeepers!
I look forward to seeing you on the course or in the clubhouse and If you have any ideas or suggestions please feel free to get in touch.
Good luck and happy golfing to all our members and their guests for the coming year, play well and play safe!
Regards,
Steve Alger
2021 Captain
