World Handicap System goes live on Monday 2nd November!
The new World Handicap System formed by the R&A and the USGA comes into force on Monday 2nd November and this system is a tried and tested way of giving golfers a more accurate handicap to promote fairer amateur golf across the board.
We are pleased to inform our members that England Golf have given early access to the World Handicap System (WHS) Golfer Platform, My England Golf, and it is now available to golf club members at Burstwick (and other clubs too).
This platform will provide golfers with a first view of their projected Handicap Index ahead of the new WHS going live on Monday, and give you an insight into how the handicaps will now be calculated.
Alan has tested this system to find out what his handicap index will be and many of our members too, and there are a few surprises in there! Overall we think it will be a much better system than we currently have now as it includes a bigger sample of scores for each player (up to 20 scores) to give a more fair and accurate handicap.

All members with handicaps should have received an email on Monday evening from the club with their CDH numbers in a PDF attachment, if you have not received this please let us know.
We know there are many golfers out there with plenty of questions about the new handicap system and Alan is doing his best to educate those who ask, but the main thing people need to realise is that you will still have an Exact Handicap (this is now called your Handicap Index, or Index for short), and each course that you play will have a course information table which tells you how many shots you receive off each set of tees (white, yellow, red, etc) according to their assessed difficulty rating. Simply go down the table and find your Index, and it will tell you how many shots you receive.
As an example, a player projected to have an index of 14.1, this will be given 14 shots at Burstwick off the white tees, but 17 shots at Hessle off the white tees, because it is a harder rated course.
There are lots of pieces of information about the new system but the software that us clubs use for handicapping will automate 95% of it, so golfers don’t necessarily need to know how it works. However, Alan is happy to try and educate anyone who has any questions or queries on the new system as best he can (he is still learning too).
Once we have been using the system for a week or two we will know better how it works in practice, rather than just what we have learned from England Golf’s education, but until then we still feel like we have a fairly good level of knowledge of what to expect.
