Lewis back in the Hunt after Club Championship

After almost a year out of competitive golf Lewis Hunt made a return to remember after winning Burstwick’s 2020 Club Championship last weekend in emphatic style.

The Club Championship is a 36-hole event played over two days at Burstwick, with two trophies up for grabs: The Club Championship goes to the best aggregate gross score and the Ted Key Trophy goes to the player with the best net scores.

Round one on Saturday saw good conditions in the morning but less then favourable ones in the afternoon. Early on one of the favourites Lee Webster had a bad round and didn’t return a card, and shortly after Scott Jackson posted a level par 69 to be leader in the clubhouse.

Later in the morning Rob Draper went out and posted a scored a 70 to put himself in second place while Lewis Hunt was teeing off around 4.30pm.

Lewis posted a fantastic score of -1 68 to become the clubhouse leader overnight.

On Sunday the top 16 gross scores play in reverse order with the leading four players teeing off at 9am. Lewis was paired with Rob, Scott and Josh Eccles, who had a 72 the day before to sneak into the top four.

As the round went on Lewis extended his lead to four shots after 11 holes but then a couple of bogeys left the door open for Rob Draper to put the pressure on - and he did.

Going into 18 Hunt and Draper were all square, and with a small crowd of people huddled around the 18th green you could visibly see both players trying to remain composed. After both made par to tie aggregate scores of 141, it was onto a sudden death play-off.

Around 30-40 people watched them tee off on the first hole again as both played safe with iron shots, leaving short pitches into the green. Rob hit his pitch a little long and Lewis stroked his to about 12 feet. Rob almost holed a 40 foot putt for birdie but just missed, leaving Lewis to drain his putt and claim the championship.

The winner of the Ted Key Trophy was Michael Hunter with a fantastic weekend of scoring, two 64s were enough to see off the other 114 players in the field, great shooting!
