USA take stunning victory over Europe in Burstwick Cup
Last weekend we hosted the infamous Burstwick Cup which is one of the most fun events in our calendar. The format takes resemblance to the Ryder Cup where USA take on Europe in a Matchplay event.
Day one consisted of fourball betterball matchplay whereby pairs from each team are pitted against each other, with a total of 6 points being up for grabs. Although it could have been argued that both teams were very even on paper, team USA quickly went on the offensive and charged to a 4-2 lead.
With the European team certain to not let their determination waiver, Captain Mike Smith rallied up the troops on Sunday morning as the blues set out to cut the deficit and make amends for their first day performance.
Things did not go the European's way. USA Captain Bruce Carter got the reds off to a strong start with a win, and Dave Thompson continued before Ashley Heidstra got a point back for the Europeans.
With the scores USA 6-3 Europe at this point and with nine matches still to come in it was game on! Or, game off, as far as the European's were concerned. Match after match the USA team started to trounce Mike's lads, and with 5 matches still to play it was already all over!
In the end the blue team just could not compete. The score finished at USA 13.5-4.5 Europe, an absolute crushing victory for the reds. Well done to everyone that played, particularly the American team and their captain Bruce Carter!
