#TeamGib Cup at Burstwick raises £800 for Carl Giblin
On Sunday we hosted the inaugural #TeamGib cup raising money for Carl Giblin, a local lad who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in September 2013 at the tender age of just 28. Carl, who has a wife Amy and baby son Arlo, used to play football and go to the gym every week, he was one of the healthiest people his large group of friends knew.
MND is a terminal, degenerative condition that affects the Motor Neurones, which now means that three years later Carl has no movement from the neck down and communicates with his eyes, using a eye gaze device.
Carl's brother Ross and long-time friend Ryan Pettit teamed up with Gary Thompson, who is a long standing member of Burstwick, to create a golf day in aid of raising funds for Carl's developing care requirements.
After some excellent efforts from the three friends of Carl, a Ryder Cup style event was created with two teams: #TeamGib and #TeamTomo.
With players from the Hull and East Yorkshire area taking part, two teams of twelve players were pitted against each other in the 36 hole event, with the first round taking the form of Pairs Scramble Matchplay and the afternoon games being Individual Matchplay. In the preparation of the event ideas were being exchanged on how to raise as much money as possible for Carl, and the trio settled for a straightest drive, longest drive and three nearest the pins, as well has "sand tax" and "water tax" on certain holes.
Whilst the golf was played in a great spirit, both teams wanted to take home the trophy and have their name engraved for the first ever winners of this event which will be played annually, so there was some fantastic banter between the two groups on the first tee and in the clubhouse. After half way #TeamGib was leading 4-2, but it was all to play for in the afternoon as 12 points were up for grabs.
When the results started rolling in late on in the afternoon it was not looking good for #TeamTomo, and it ended up being a very one sided affair! There were a couple of players who weren't able to play in the afternoon so one point was disregarded, and in the end #TeamGib won convincingly with a score line of 10.5-6.5!
In the end around £800 was raised for Carl, which we all agreed was a fantastic amount for the first golf event of its kind, and ideas have already been flying around for next year's. It was a testament to Carl's loyal supporters and friends, he means a great deal to a lot of people.
As a club it was an absolute pleasure to host such a great event for Carl, and we wish him and his family the very best on his difficult journey.
