Laura Key Completes 100 Holes for Charity!
On Saturday 25th June Lady Captain Laura Key took on the massive challenge of attempting 100 holes of golf in a day for the Captains' nominated charity, Cash for Kids.
The challenge involves walking around 24 miles around the golf course and playing exactly five rounds and 10 holes of golf. To do this she set off at 4:10am on hole 18, playing with Director of Golf (and husband) Alan Key. Devoted member, 82 year old John Dickins volunteered to be her caddie, and the three set off on their way.
Laura's aim was to average less than 1 hour 10 minutes per 9 holes of golf, and she set of in fantastic fashion, averaging less than 50 minutes per nine holes for the first few rounds putting herself way ahead of schedule! Laura had managed to complete 64 holes of golf by only 11am, at this point it was time for a lunch break. Also it was time to wave good bye to John, who we all agreed had done a sterling job of not only caddieing for Laura, but keeping up with her!
As Laura was so far ahead of schedule she had to wait two hours for her next playing partner to finish his round of golf in the club competition. Men's Captain Alan Mackinnon had scheduled with Laura to meet at 1pm, which seemed logical when planning the day out! Laura enjoyed a well earned break, although she could be heard exclaiming "I just want to get back out there!" as she was bouncing around in the clubhouse.
Once Alan finished his competition round they set off and continues along the journey, and the weather was just getting hotter and hotter as the sun shone brightly. On this round Laura was joined by some other members who were walking round the course in support, and they even dressed up a golf buggy, or booze buggy as it now became known! Local golfers from Hornsea GC, Leigh Gawley and Joe Palmer, who had completed a similar challenge recently came to egg Laura on in the penultimate round, a great show of support from two very good golfers!
After this round with the Men's Captain, last year's Men's Captain Andy Wilson joined Laura for the final jaunt. Showing no signs of tiring Laura cracked on with the golf, although this round took the longest due to more people supporting, and more booze! After a few cracks of thunder in the distance, Laura focused her attention to speeding through the last holes, and the challenge was complete by 7pm.
Course proprietor David Key let off two rockets as she walked down the last hole, and as she walked off the green Laura was congratulated by friends and family, and the champagne was popped. Celebratory drinks went into the night as they often do at Burstwick!
Laura would like to thank all of the friends, family, coworkers, members, non-members who came to support her on this momentous day, without you all Laura wouldn't have been able to raise over £1,000 for the Cash for Kids charity. Special mentions go to Sara Hewitson for dressing up the buggy, Tracey Stevenson for providing the food and prosecco, and of course John Dickins, who at 82 years old gave his all for 64 holes on Laura's bag.
